March 2026

March 29, 2026

This week we prepared for Easter with a few musical rehearsals and a neighborhood Easter Egg dash. Kassie, Hinckley, and I are playing "He is Risen" with our ward orchestra and band and I'm singing "I love the Lord" (Nephi's psalm that BYU men's chorus did those years ago) with some men in the ward. Hinckley has finished up the swim season and is excited about 2 weeks off before the summer season starts. Addie got a haircut this week which she was very excited about, and reported that it was well received by her peers at school. The allergies have been rough on her. She had a fun date with Mom and her friend Brooke going to a Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary celebration in Provo where they did beads and other things. Addie loves watching that show.

Greyson had a big scooter wipe out this week and his face is recovering pretty well. He enjoyed watching much of David at a friend's house Saturday night. He is out scootering every spare minute, and if there's a reason he has to be inside then he is scootering with his "finger scooter" that he bought with some of his own money. Desi continues to figure out his personality, which involves resisting things like bibs, clothes, being at the table while eating and essentially anything we would like him to do. It looks like his easy going nature is a thing of the past. He continues to only want dinosaur things. Everyone came to my Lehi Community Band performance at the Jr High and Desi especially liked the percussion pieces.

This week flew by and spring has sprung. The blossoms are out and the weeds are up and the days are stretching out longer. I showed the kids a few clips of "Joseph and the Technicolor DreamCoat" this week and they really liked it. Hinckley and I sat in a very long hunter safety course and are now certified hunters. I managed to literally miss the target in all 30 shots I took hahaha. Hinckley pointed out afterwards that I didn't use the scope at all which might explain it. The animals will be safe from me that's for sure. We are going to go on a hunt this fall with my father-in-law, but don't have any details yet. Kassie and I saw "Project Hail Mary" in the theater. It's a new movie based on one of our very favorite books. Go see it!

Addie has started taking walks after school and in the early evening and enjoys listening to audio books as she moves through the neighborhood. She was very excited about her haircut on Saturday and eager to show her friends. She and the two older boys seemed to enjoy seeing the Candy Bomber musical up in SLC at the school that put it on Saturday afternoon. It was pretty cute and fun to see the legacy continue in the lives of young people.

Desmond has solidified his hatred of all clothes other than PJs. He threw a powerful fit about Sunday clothes today and it took all powers of muscle, patience, and willingness to not use reason to get him into the car and go. He loves going after "Gee Gee" (Greyson) and "ADDIE!!!" especially on the trampoline now that it's warming up. We got out the shorts and t-shirts today and he seems more open to those clothes, especially given all the dinosaur prints.

This week the kids had another day off of school with a teacher prep day so I took Greyson skiing. He is growing in confidence and we had a fun time. He wanted to get home in time to scooter/skateboard with friends and it turns out it was warm enough that I gave into their pleadings to run the hose sprinkler for a few min under the trampoline. Addie decided to start voice lessons which will begin near the end of the month and she's excited to be learning the "music" topic on Duolingo as a part of that. She and Kassie had a fun date to a place called Beadology where you make jewelry with beads. Hinckley spent a lot of fun with his friends and is excited about building out his YouTube channel. He has a lot of creative ideas and a great sense of humor that continues to peek out every once and a while! Desi continues to "roar!" and also loves "WATER!", and is always hoping we take him to the pond nearby to throw rocks in.

I had a work dinner this week with some Utah L&D leaders and our Chief Learning Officer who lives in UT part of the year. It was refreshing to hear from them and that it's not just the rank and file workers who feel existential, excited, and flabbergasted by all the AI stuff going on these days.

This week was Hinckley's state swim competition. It was 3 days long in Bountiful and he swam 6 prelim events, 3 finals events and 3 relays (he swam Freestyle as the anchor for all three relays). He made some big personal records and seem to have a positive experience all around. It's a big time commitment but at least for now it seems to be the right thing for him.

Addie explored a few voice lesson options this week and we found a teacher that she is excited about. She'll begin at the end of March. I enjoyed seeing her seeing in these sessions and hope this can be something she can grow in. She had a blast at a friend Harry Potter themed birthday early in the week, and got another evaluation for braces...

Greyson had more trips to the skatepark this week with friends. He continues to build model skateparks from cardboard and even made a cardboard scooter. He always wants to be outside in motion.

Desmond decided this week that he hates pants and any clothes in general that aren't PJs. It really just was like a flip switched over night. He enjoys calling out for "ADDIE!" and has started referring to Greyson as "GG!" (He usually calls all his siblings by Addie's name. He has developed a love of parks and slides. He is still very much obsessed with dinosaurs ("ROARS!") and discovered that the American Fork Library has a collection of large dino figures you can play with on location. Daylight Savings was not kind to Desmond and he barely made it through church (we have 1:30 p.m. church) and had a rough afternoon.

I had a fun morning with the younger 3 on Saturday while Kas took H to his final swim day. We rode the Frontrunner for one stop and went to the library. Addie and I made cookies after and now that's all that anyone will eat.

Dishes

It is that time of day when the house is quiet, the table is half covered in pots, pans, and tuber ware with food scattered across. The car isn’t in the garage and the dog lies sleeping on the blue blanket. The sun lies somewhere back there, behind the cloud over those mountains. It makes some nice gold colors on the rocky face of the mountains outside of the window. I guess it is so nice because at this time of year there is a lot of plants and flowers in the back yard so the gold makes it seem sort of dreamlike. Yeah, I’ll do em I guess. Call it being nice or being bored. Does it matter? Approaching the sink I am nipped by the denting smell. The eggshells, scraps of mango, carrot peel, and chunks of tofu drip in my fingers. Oh yes, the trash is under the sink these days. Drip once, drip twice on the floor. The water in the frying pan trembles, shaking the crusty flakes of burnt egg. Yogurt and peanu...

September 2025

September 28, 2025 This week brought a mix of new experiences and challenges. Hinckley had additional surgery after the chains came out of his gums. It seemed quite painful, but he handled it well. To keep him from being too bored during recovery, I made him watch Cast Away. I visited Kassie at her work and got to see her doctor’s office and meet some of her colleagues. She seems to be doing well and is enjoying learning new skills like giving shots and doing blood draws. Happy guy (photo by Abi) Desmond has been keeping us entertained with his wobbly walking, which takes him everywhere—around the neighborhood, at church, in our backyard, and even on BYU campus when we met up with Mom and Dad to visit the Bean Museum and grab lunch at the Cougar Eat. His favorite spot at home is still the strawberry patch, where he happily eats berries—even though the season is winding down.
