New Again Brad Paisley & Sara Evans

The lesson today for Sunday School was about friendship. We reviewed over the story about Saul, David, and Jonathan and what made their relationships the way they were. It hit me last night as I was reading in John 15 when the Savior explains that there is no greater love then laying ones life down for their friends. We don't do that, especially like He did. However I thought about how I can lay down the life of pride and natural disposition to do ill by living the Gospel pattern of living. This charitable approach is the core of friendship I think, thus the Lord says we are his friends - if we do as He says. By following His commandments we are enabling His sacrifice to lift us up to higher planes. It is interesting to think of it in that way.

Today I went to visit one of my mission companions and his uncle. His uncle wrote "Forever Strong" and knows many folks in the LDS film industry. We sat down and had a good long talk. He was very realistic and straight forward about his life up till this point and I appreciated his frankness concerning how hard it is to be a worthy member of the Church and feel accomplished as a filmmaker. I have always understood the hardness of the situation but it meant more coming from him. I know that I could carve something out of the industry if I really wanted to - but in light of the above paragraph perhaps I should think less of what awards I could win and credits I can obtain but more so about what I can do for my family and those around me. I am striving to understand those great questions of the soul like "what should I be when I grow up?" Certainly the idea of being a zoo keeper not enchanting anymore and my drive to be a taxi driver as dissipated. But that is what it is all about I think, working out our salvation (and many many other things like careers and relationships) with fear and trembling before the Lord. This man I talked to mentioned that maybe too often we expect the Lord to open all the doors when in reality He wants us to work it out.

  1. I am loving watching you work it out G! You're doing it with class and in the right way as far as I can tell. What is the picture of?

  2. I fixed it - it is a video, though when I posted it I think it was a picture. I showed this to the SS school class and this sort of motivated some of those thoughts. The footage in the video is from the "Passion of the Christ"

  3. Hey G, I'm finally catching up on the WW and found your link! WHat great thoughts from a thoughtful, good young man. It's neat to hear what you are working through. It's a lifelong process to do what the Lord really wants us to. We are excited to see you all this weekend.

  4. Gray--thanks for sharing your process. The Atonement and the life of the Savior seem to be never-ending wells of wisdom for us. Thanks for your beautiful thoughts!

September 2026

October 4, 2026 This last week was a full one and was quite eventful. Monday Desi cut his chin open again at daycare, I accidentally drugged addie with the "drowsy" allergy medicine instead of the other one so she needed to come home early from school and slept for 5 hours, and Greyson was sick in the morning but good enough for me to take him to school before lunch time. Tuesday, I had a wonderful hike with Hinckley in which we summitted Mt Nebo in less than 5 hours. It was a stunning day and the colors were out and we had just perfect weather. Thursday Addie and I got to go to a Daddy/Daughter dance our elders quorum put on at the church and it was amazing! We had a lot of fun dancing and grooving to the tunes and enjoyed the treats as well. Friday Hinckley had a swim meet in Provo and beat all his times by at least 2 seconds, and also got a state qualifying time - not bad for the first meet of the season! It was my last week with McKinsey and that went well. I'm gratef...

Dishes

It is that time of day when the house is quiet, the table is half covered in pots, pans, and tuber ware with food scattered across. The car isn’t in the garage and the dog lies sleeping on the blue blanket. The sun lies somewhere back there, behind the cloud over those mountains. It makes some nice gold colors on the rocky face of the mountains outside of the window. I guess it is so nice because at this time of year there is a lot of plants and flowers in the back yard so the gold makes it seem sort of dreamlike. Yeah, I’ll do em I guess. Call it being nice or being bored. Does it matter? Approaching the sink I am nipped by the denting smell. The eggshells, scraps of mango, carrot peel, and chunks of tofu drip in my fingers. Oh yes, the trash is under the sink these days. Drip once, drip twice on the floor. The water in the frying pan trembles, shaking the crusty flakes of burnt egg. Yogurt and peanu...

Almost There!

Tomorrow is our baby's due date! We don't think he will come tomorrow, but one never knows. Here are some pics from this week. School is going pretty well for me, though I transition to writing/reading from doing math for the past two weeks so I am a little nervous about that. The view from the bus just before I get off and start teaching for the day. Usually I am barely awake at this point.  Awesome panorama of our classroom. It has taken a lot of work to get all this stuff up, but it could still use lots more! Here is a view of the front of the classroom, along with our space ship behavior chart and so forth.  I decided to see what would happen if I didn't shave during the week This was the result.  Kas is feeling quite big, and ready for the man child to come out! This week Kas learned how to make homemade yogurt - or at least how to extend the yogurt you already have.  The latest creative masterpiece from Kassie is this littl...
