what is art?

Today in class we really got into an interesting discussion. First off, the question posed both by Tolstoy and the rest of the world: what is art? After reading the selections given us and then discussing it, I have come to realize that I really don't know! Not only that but what do we do with it? What about those that create it? I am learning that in his book What is Art? Tolstoy argues that if one makes art for money then they are prostituting this gift. But then we think, well we have to make a living right? And hey, isn't building structures, teaching classes, or even flipping burgers things that can be done artfully? But perhaps "true" art is only achieved on a few occasions in ones lifetime and when that is done for the purpose of gain then perhaps that is almost sinful. Taking an ability to create and give life to something, and deliberately using it for opposing motives does sound pretty harsh. I was told that Tolstoy sort of abandoned his mansion and hung out with the servants in his field. That is interesting, and perhaps true to his art, but I don't want to live in the field with my wife and kids!
The underlaying factor is why and how? My professor shared some things from Jacob 2 about seeking riches should come after glory of God, and then, only seeking riches to do good. He also shared some different things about how we decide on what we view and it really does come to a sort of personal relationship with the Lord and figuring it out with Him. It is very challenging for me. What makes Michelangelo's David art? To the unlearned or perhaps the naive viewer it may just appear as some naked man in a somewhat strange position. To many, some films seem like bad or inappropriate art and this is not necessarily bad. But if I am studying film, and right now I am, then how can I find the line between recognizing the Davids of the industry and shunning the naked men that are most definitely overpopulating the wold? I don't know.

  1. Great questions Grey! Glad you're examining them and thinking hard about them. That can only make the world a better place.

  2. Very interesting! Those are some great questions. How do you think this ties in with the statement, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"?

  3. Well we read this story by Hans Christian Anderson called "Neighbors" that deals with beauty and that statement. I know there are many beautiful things people appreciate, and things that they don't. Beauty, art, love, happiness, all these things I can't really describe!

September 2026

October 4, 2026 This last week was a full one and was quite eventful. Monday Desi cut his chin open again at daycare, I accidentally drugged addie with the "drowsy" allergy medicine instead of the other one so she needed to come home early from school and slept for 5 hours, and Greyson was sick in the morning but good enough for me to take him to school before lunch time. Tuesday, I had a wonderful hike with Hinckley in which we summitted Mt Nebo in less than 5 hours. It was a stunning day and the colors were out and we had just perfect weather. Thursday Addie and I got to go to a Daddy/Daughter dance our elders quorum put on at the church and it was amazing! We had a lot of fun dancing and grooving to the tunes and enjoyed the treats as well. Friday Hinckley had a swim meet in Provo and beat all his times by at least 2 seconds, and also got a state qualifying time - not bad for the first meet of the season! It was my last week with McKinsey and that went well. I'm gratef...

Dishes

It is that time of day when the house is quiet, the table is half covered in pots, pans, and tuber ware with food scattered across. The car isn’t in the garage and the dog lies sleeping on the blue blanket. The sun lies somewhere back there, behind the cloud over those mountains. It makes some nice gold colors on the rocky face of the mountains outside of the window. I guess it is so nice because at this time of year there is a lot of plants and flowers in the back yard so the gold makes it seem sort of dreamlike. Yeah, I’ll do em I guess. Call it being nice or being bored. Does it matter? Approaching the sink I am nipped by the denting smell. The eggshells, scraps of mango, carrot peel, and chunks of tofu drip in my fingers. Oh yes, the trash is under the sink these days. Drip once, drip twice on the floor. The water in the frying pan trembles, shaking the crusty flakes of burnt egg. Yogurt and peanu...

Almost There!

Tomorrow is our baby's due date! We don't think he will come tomorrow, but one never knows. Here are some pics from this week. School is going pretty well for me, though I transition to writing/reading from doing math for the past two weeks so I am a little nervous about that. The view from the bus just before I get off and start teaching for the day. Usually I am barely awake at this point.  Awesome panorama of our classroom. It has taken a lot of work to get all this stuff up, but it could still use lots more! Here is a view of the front of the classroom, along with our space ship behavior chart and so forth.  I decided to see what would happen if I didn't shave during the week This was the result.  Kas is feeling quite big, and ready for the man child to come out! This week Kas learned how to make homemade yogurt - or at least how to extend the yogurt you already have.  The latest creative masterpiece from Kassie is this littl...
