The end of the school year has come and we can hardly believe it! Greyson is done with preschool and has been asking us each day of the week, "is it summer now?" He is in that fun stage where he is trying to read the signs as we go by. He made a "book" for Addie this week, along with a sailboat, a ghost costume, and more. He is always busy making things.

Hinckley and Addie had their field day, class parties (of which I got to volunteer in Addie's class for hers), dance performances, and goodbyes. Addie was quite tearful about being done, but I think she is happy that summer has arrived as well. Hinckley really struggled to make it to the end, but he did it. He discovered the joy of building his own video game of sorts in Scratch and that fed his imagination in these last days. He and I had a really fun date going mountain biking at an instructional trailhead (that's a thing!) in Draper. It was a perfect day, a great trail for us beginners, and hardly a soul around. We had a blast!

Saturday we packed up and all went to Provo where Addie did her final ice skating class and I took the boys to visit grandma and grandpa's grave. When that was wrapped we headed to Colorado and arrived in time for cookies and the hot tub. The kids enjoyed their movie/Zelda marathon in the car and all in all the trip was uneventful (in a good way). Summer is here!

This week started when the whole family went to drop off Addie at music class and we played at the park nearby while she was there. I suppose this is the last time we’ll be doing that, or maybe next to last time actually as she is finishing that up this week. Hinckley has really improved his frisbee throwing and it was a lot of fun throwing that back and forth together! We've been doing that a lot lately.

Greyson has been asking for a tank top lately. He wants to have one for his exercise and to be a true ninja. So early this week Kassie took him to Kid-to-Kid and he was extremely excited to come home and put it on. It is a bright yellow-green color and he wore it basically all week. He has LOVED the outside weather and has been going to a park in the mornings, playing outside much of the day (he even turned the TV off himself) and then playing at the park this evenings if he can convince people to go with him. He has been falling asleep nearly as soon as his head hits the pillow and only wakes up when he has bloody noses in the wee hours of the morning. He loved spending time with Grandpa and Nana and was a good friend with Kelli at the Tulip Festival in Thanksgiving Point.

Friday night was our Stake Father's and Son's campout. I took the boys for the evening activities but decided to not camp since Saturday was so packed. We drove way over on the west side of Utah like directly behind West mountain. I’ve never been there before and it was pretty neat to get that perspective of the valley. Hinckley had some friends from school there and he had a good time doing things with them. Greyson and I tried badminton, a fun frisbee throwing game, and then writing/drawing in the dirt. We also saw some lizards in a wood pile that he liked, and also “explored the wilderness” for a little before the mosquitos began eating my head. Hinckley’s other highlight was we discovered an old tall wooden tower of sorts. Working together we engineered a way for him to climb up to the top which made him very happy (he couldn’t imagine doing anything else until he conquered that).

Addie and Kassie had a really fun girls night while we were out. They went and got some dinner and watched Princess Diaries while putting on facemasks. Addie was very excited to tell me all about it, and like with other movies she loves is eager to show me that one now haha.

Saturday we had a packed day of final concerts and showcases. Greyson had his Ninja showcase this morning and was very excited about getting a medal and showing our whole family all he could do. It was really cute to see him up there doing his different activities. Hinckley had his second annual BBQ piano recital, and it likely will be his last. He has been voicing a desire to quit and given he has gone 2 years beyond Lets Play Music we are calling it a victory. He is interested in violin at the moment so perhaps we’ll give that a try. He was excited to have Nana and Grandpa come, along with Logan. Logan came home with us to play Zelda with Hinckley and they were very excited to do that together for a few hours. Addie’s concert this evening was her last Let’s Play Music event and she played her own composition “My Friend- Snowman”. I’m glad she made it to the end, and it looks like she won’t continue with piano. It has been very very difficult these last few months just to go to the lessons. She is interested in choir though so perhaps she will sing and enjoy that. I am glad she has some foundational music experience anyway.

We continue to enjoy the amazing colors of springtime here in Lehi. The allergies have been rough for many in our home which is the only downside to what feels like an extended spring.

Greyson made little tickets this week and has been giving them to each of us. They can be redeemed for a custom “toy” that he creates. I got a little bottle cap glued to a paper which is supposed to hold flipped coins. He also has been writing little love notes to Kassie and others that say “I luv u”. Very cute. Greyson and Kassie had a fun date hiking the Y on Monday. He got a ton of hiking/outside time in this week as he spent Tuesday and Thursday morning with Grandpa going on multiple hikes and attending a couple different parks as well. He really soaked it all in! He has been begging for scrap wood and metal to "make stuff" and so we got some more scrap from Lowe's on Saturday. He joyously set to hammering away as soon as we got home. He is constantly working on building things out of paper or otherwise.

Addie finished reading Holes this week and has been especially eager to play with friends every day. She told me about a game at recess where she has been pretending to be a little English girl with French friends (they make up the French language as well) haha. It was really cute overhearing Addie and her friend Brooke playing here at home while I was working. They were playing “Little House on the Prairie” wearing bonnets and even pretending to be blind like Laura's sister Mary. On Saturday Addie got her ears pierced on a date with Kassie after ice skating lessons and then they had a picnic afterward. I was a little surprised she faced the fear of the pain but she did and has been elated about it.

Hinckley is ready for school to end and had some tough moments this week wishing this were the case here and now. That said, all was made right on Saturday when he was able to trade in two of his Switch games and all his money to get the newest Zelda game which he has been anticipating for about 2 years now. He was so excited to dive in and discover that there are seemingly infinite possibilities to create and explore in the game. It is really quite remarkable. He read The Hobbit for the third time and we got some books about electrical engineering from the library he is pretty interested in. So here's to hoping he can continue being curious.

This week Addie got to bring her white fox diorama to school and share that. She was very excited that she was able to do the white fox as apparently many others wanted it too but she ran to the front of the room fastest when the assignments were going out.

Hinckley continues to work on his engineering vision and had a good visit with Uncle Kendall this week! He ordered two Raspberry Pi Picos (microcomputers) which are just a few bucks and has been learning how to do some basic Python to code things on there. He is very excited about that.

We went to the elementary school on Friday night for the Family Fun Night put on by the PTA. It was a little rainy and cold so they had it in the gym with food trucks just outside. The kids seemed to have a fun time despite mostly melting down once we got home. There was nachos, corn dogs, soda, cotton candy, some yard games, face painting, the playground, and at the very end - chalk throwing. The event started out rough, but by the end it looked like each of them had a somewhat good time.

Saturday we enjoyed seeing Jack get baptized and felt the special spirit of the ordinance with Dad's talk on baptism and Abi's talk on the Holy Ghost with Mom's music. Addie is very eager to get baptized now! Indeed she may have crossed over into the realm of covetousness which... I suppose envying another's baptism is probably not the worst kind of envy one could have haha.

Our front yard tree has been blossoming which is all of our favorite! We can't get enough of it.

Hinckley's Two Month Update

I can't believe it has only been two months since Hinckley joined our family! It feels like a lot longer than that and he is growing so big way too fast! At his two month check-up today, he weighed 13 lb 12 oz and was 26 1/4 inches long. Apparently he is so tall that he is off the medical charts for his age. Hinckley is such a happy, easy-going baby. He smiles, laughs, and coos a lot. Having him in our family is so fun because he helps us realize the joy of everything once again. He smiles at bright colors or new sounds, enjoys kisses and cuddling, and squeals in delight at seeing nature when we take walks. Yesterday at church it was like he had a rubber neck; for about five minutes he just kept turning back and forth to take it all in--the sights, sounds, and smells. Today he had to get three shots at the doctor's office and even that didn't phase him for long. Oh he screamed and his face got redder than I have ever seen it. I held him and fed him afterwards and then ...

So begins our stay in DC

I will try to keep a fairly good record of our exploits and adventures here in the Nation's capital. It is exciting and I am particularly happy about the amazing opportunities there are for pictures! Our trip began at the bus stop outside of the Barlow Center. I took an exterior shot of the Center - the top 2.5 windows on the right are ours. Once on the bus we went past some of the "Occupy" folk which was interesting. And then we came to our stop just outside of Union Station (where I will also be getting off to work at the FJC). Our first grand site was the Capital. So here we are. Washington DC is very different for both Kass and I, but we are finding a way to call it home as quickly as we can. Our first full day in DC consisted of going to Safeway on the bus, eating a modest lunch, and then going to the the Mall for the second time. We began at the capital building and headed towards the Lincoln Memorial (2 miles) before walking home another 2 miles or so. Our first st...

O.T.: Our Town

This evening I watched O.T.: Our Town , a documentary about high school students in Compton putting on Wilder's classic play at an institution where no drama event has been held in over 20 years.    A few things stood out to me about the film including the excellent characters, the unique commentary on the human condition, and the filmmaker's ability to raise the stakes.             The students and teachers that are pictured in O.T. were very dynamic and interesting. I appreciate the filmmakers avoiding trying to classify each student into a group such as  "jocks" or a "nerds".  Instead a very honest and genuine portrait was captured as the filmmakers followed individual students into their homes and interacted with their family and friends. The insight and voice of the students themselves made this fi...
