We enjoyed having Mom and Dad over this week. Greyson was excited to show them all his hand-crafted books and things, Addie got into her Hermoine costume she got for her birthday to share as well. Desmond appreciated the additional squeezes and attention. He thrives on that! He can really kick his legs when he gets excited. He had a doctor's check-up this week and got some shots in his thunder thighs. He howled with all the power his lungs could muster, poor guy. The pain aside, he is doing well and growing at a consistent pace.

Greyson had a lot more bike practice this week and is really proud of himself. He's done a great job! He started piano lessons using the Hoffman Method. After day one he was extremely excited to show how he can play hot cross buns. By the next day his excitement had withered and he began a pattern of resistance. We'll see how it goes.

Addie has started up cross country and though she seems to not look forward to it, always comes home happy. She has her first meet of the season this week. She is also starting a new Lehi community choir that is a little closer to home and while nervous about it also seems excited. She loves singing in her room with her new Google assistant (birthday). It is a new era on that front.

Hinckley's soccer team had their first loss this week. I've not done well at all with my goal to not yell as the coach. Always next week to try better! He also had his swim tryouts for the local club team. He was so nervous and didn't feel great about it, but we'll see - we should get the results back sometime this week. He has been reading a lot and figuring out friend drama at school. He likes his teacher but is struggling with the high spirited classmates, many of whom have ADHD and big personalities.

Kassie and I went to one of our favorite restaurants in SLC and watched Fall Guy at home for a belated anniversary date. We enjoyed the good food! On Saturday I took the kids on a "Dad day" outing to UVU to see the stained glass, and the to a nearby park to feed the ducks some peas. It was Desmond's first contact with grass and we all enjoyed at least parts of the adventure. Afterward, we came home to watch "The Karate Kid" (the original) on Vid Angel.

I missed last week so here is a quick 2 week recap of activities and highlights. It's been a full 2 weeks:

Quick Park City trip. We stayed 3 nights and had fun going on a ski lift, riding on a zip line, chasing squirrels (Greyson), hiking (Greyson/Kassie), watching Disney channel, swimming, and more. The kids had a great time!

Timp hike. Hinckley, Logan Kay, and I hiked Timp. It was perfect weather and we say a moose and it's calf, many mountain goats, and a wonderful view from the top shack.

Adelaide's birthday. We have a 9-year-old now! Addie had a great day and was so excited about every little thing. Our HOA had reserved a pool on the evening of her birthday so she and her brothers enjoyed swimming with friends and neighbors. She also had fun shopping with mom and eating chocolate cake with pizza. The Burnsides took Addie and Hinckley horseback riding for their birthdays. They had a great time!

Quick Rexburg trip. I took the three older kids up to see Lucy and family. Greyson had so much fun running around with the Tiechert boys! Hinckley enjoyed hitting the concrete with a sledge hammer a few times. Everyone had fun on the trampoline, putting on a play with two supermen in it, and the highlight was running around the amazing garden area on BYU Idaho campus. We listened to two full audio books between the drive up and back.

New activities and school. Hinckley had his first two soccer games which went well, he seems to be enjoying it a little more. Addie started cross country again and seems excited about that. Everyone started school and for the most part had a great back-to-school week, including new haircuts and plenty of excitement about new clothes and finding new friends.

Insane hail storm. For at least 10 minutes we had a giant hailstorm, with the stones getting near goofball size. Roofing contractors have been on the offensive in our area and one described our roof as now being "toast". We think our insurance should cover it.

Quick AZ trip. I really appreciated attending Grandpa's funeral and felt connected to him and generations past. What a great man. I enjoyed singing at his graveside and at the funeral. It was good to see many family members I haven't visited in a very long time.

Addie and Greyson completed their week-long “Up with Kids” acting camp that includes daily trips to the pool. This year it was an adapted version of Peter Pan. Greyson was a pirate and a leaf nymph guy (I think?) and Addie was a mermaid, a “lost child…dog?” and a tree. They were very cute saying their lines and singing along with everyone. At the performance, Greyson had his pirate bandana over his eyes for half the thing haha. Remarkably Desmond sat in near silence the whole time staring blankly. Hinckley was a good sport.

Hinckley finished swimming Saturday and did great in his IM, finally getting a qualifying time MUCH to everyone’s relief. It was the final race he needed to get in order to have a qualifying time in all strokes. He did really well. I participated in a parent relay afterwards which was really fun too! After we got treats at the Rec center concessions stand. Then Kassie took him to see Twisters which they both seemed to enjoy quite a lot.

Addie and Greyson had fun at the zoo with Grandma and Granddad Burnside and had a blast.

Hinckley's Two Month Update

I can't believe it has only been two months since Hinckley joined our family! It feels like a lot longer than that and he is growing so big way too fast! At his two month check-up today, he weighed 13 lb 12 oz and was 26 1/4 inches long. Apparently he is so tall that he is off the medical charts for his age. Hinckley is such a happy, easy-going baby. He smiles, laughs, and coos a lot. Having him in our family is so fun because he helps us realize the joy of everything once again. He smiles at bright colors or new sounds, enjoys kisses and cuddling, and squeals in delight at seeing nature when we take walks. Yesterday at church it was like he had a rubber neck; for about five minutes he just kept turning back and forth to take it all in--the sights, sounds, and smells. Today he had to get three shots at the doctor's office and even that didn't phase him for long. Oh he screamed and his face got redder than I have ever seen it. I held him and fed him afterwards and then

Almost There!

Tomorrow is our baby's due date! We don't think he will come tomorrow, but one never knows. Here are some pics from this week. School is going pretty well for me, though I transition to writing/reading from doing math for the past two weeks so I am a little nervous about that. The view from the bus just before I get off and start teaching for the day. Usually I am barely awake at this point.  Awesome panorama of our classroom. It has taken a lot of work to get all this stuff up, but it could still use lots more! Here is a view of the front of the classroom, along with our space ship behavior chart and so forth.  I decided to see what would happen if I didn't shave during the week This was the result.  Kas is feeling quite big, and ready for the man child to come out! This week Kas learned how to make homemade yogurt - or at least how to extend the yogurt you already have.  The latest creative masterpiece from Kassie is this little elep

The final product of "make me a match" that I labored over exceedingly. I was actually sort of unhappy with it all not because of the performances of anyone but mainly just the story. We had to write all so quickly and the re-write it time after time and then storyboard it and really break it down. In all this rush I didn't realize till I was actually shooting it that I really didn't care much for the story as a whole and thus my motivation suffered greatly. I don't think I need to tell epic dramatic tales to care about them but I do want to have a strong point and also a specific conflict or issue that is approached and resolved. I am starting a screen writing class tomorrow and possibly I will gain some insights as to how to develop good stories. Ones that I care about. I don't know why I feel so interested in telling stories - particularly in that I haven't felt very confident with the stories I have come up with. It is extremely hard for me to come up
