January 2025

February 2, 2025

This week I feel like I aged a decade each day. I got the sickness and was out of it for a little, and then threw my back out too and was a bit of a mess. I'm truly grateful for ibuprofen. Luckily I'm feeling back on track to health. Unfortunately Kassie and Desmond are not. They appear to have entered a miserable second stage of sickness that has redoubled from last week and have lots of congestion. We continue to cheer Desmond on in his attempt to get 3 nights in a row sleeping all night, but alas he is still stuck at 2 as his all-time record. Addie had a few nights of throwing up, threw up at school, and also demonstrated the act during breakfast. She seems to finally be doing well. Hopefully we'll turn the leaf on this chapter soon.

Hinckley got back into his electronic coding a bunch this week which has been fun to see. One of his Deacon's quorum advisors is an electrical engineer and gave him all sorts of equipment and wires and things. Hinckley was so excited and it was fun to see him working through challenges with such energy. He finished a story for school in which he wrote his own Greek myth which he seemed ok with.

Greyson has renewed his interest in Diary of a Wimpy Kid and is reading/watching those a bunch. He still loves "I Survived" books and disasters. We decided not to do the karate classes at this time and he took the news well. He did get a blowup punching bag in the shape of a dinosaur that he loves beating up so maybe he can funnel his energy there. He will be doing soccer with his friend Luke again in the spring and is excited about that.

This week started with MLK day in which the kids didn't have school and I didn't have work. I went with Greyson and Addie to do a small service project at Thanksgiving point which we enjoyed (putting kits together), and then Hinckley went with me to a funeral for a brother in our ward who passed away unexpectedly. It was a sobering experience. Hinckley had his first experience doing baptisms for the dead this week which went really well! Unfortunately Kassie was sick and unable to go, but her parents went with us and he seemed to have a good experience.

Desmond starting waving his hand this week. He doesn't seem to know what it means, but loves the big reaction he gets from us when he does it! He still isn't quite crawling but loves to scoot around to things he wants. He got pretty sick this week too and that's been sad to see him down. Hopefully he will get feeling better soon and be restored to his natural cheery temperament.

Discovering water

Addie enjoyed cheer this week and was home sick one day as well. She and Greyson had a lot of fun playing in the snow that fell most of Saturday. She's been working things out with friends and math at school and there has been some hard things she is learning through.

Greyson had a great 7th birthday today! He enjoyed a really fun friend party Saturday at a jump park and I loved seeing him lead a pack of happy boys from activity to activity. They had so much fun! He is excited about more books and other things he got. We had pizza both days and he wanted donuts in bed in the morning. He is quite the guy!

This week we tried out a karate place for Greyson and he really liked it. It was hard to decide not to move forward with it though as it would be a much bigger commitment in time and resource than we are prepared for. He took the news remarkably well! (much better than the news that he needs to peel his own oranges now...haha). Desmond had a lot of nights crying this week as he is growing a bunch more teeth in on top and also growing his brain a bunch as he discovers an ever-increasingly large world to explore. He isn't quite crawling but has figured out a scooting/rolling method that allows him to transport a few feet in near silence. We are realizing it is time to keep a much closer watch on him!

Addie and Hinckley had a good week in their various activities (swimming, violin, play practice, cheer). We got our first snow that required a small degree of shoveling and Greyson and Addie were out at the park for over an hour playing with friends in the cold. Hinckley had a fun night out Grandma and Grandad Burnsides in SLC (swimming, McDonalds, 3 games of Dominion, a movie). We had Trent and Abi's families over along with Ryrie Sunday night which was fun for all.

January 12, 2025

This was a big week for Hinckley. He was ordained a Deacon and set apart as the Deacons quorum secretary, and had his first Youth activity at the church and passed the sacrament for the first time. He attended his first fireside this evening as well with a US Olympian which he really enjoyed. If that wasn't enough, he had a massive oral surgery and had his baby canines removed and some chains glued to his adult canines which have gone astray. Over the next few years the orthodontist will be cranking that chain to get the teeth into place...yowza. He did well with it though, and enjoyed a day off of school playing Zelda.

Addie started up her activities this week and was happy to return to school. She is doing a play with her friend Brooke as a part of the Lehi community theater - Alice in Wonderland. They had a lot of fun practicing the songs and lines for tryouts this week. She'll find out her part this week and she is extremly excited about it. Also Addie is trying out cheerleading and had her first cheer practice on Saturday. She was a bit nervous and when she changed into her cheer clothes was not so sure about the short skirt...but by the end and the rest of the day she didn't want to change! She had a lot of fun and won an award for being enthusiastic on the first day.

Greyson is exploring martial arts and went to a free trial class this week which he really loved. He is trying out a different place this coming week. He wants to punch things ... hopefully he can get that out of his system in those classes. Kassie and Greyson went on a fun date to "Little Beakers" on Saturday where they did some science experiments and had fun making messes. He also went to a fun library kids club activity where he drew a picture of himself as a CIA agent and he investigated clues. He is very excited for his upcoming birthday and seems to get more energy and volume every day.

Desmond has started shaking his head when feeling goofy and looking for laughs. It's really cute to see him wagging around! He isn't crawling but is coming dangerously close to doing so. He makes us all laugh and the kids hang on his every noise and expression. He is sprouting a few teeth on the top of his mouth which will help is lone two on the bottom do some good chomping. He is always the first to start eating and the last to leave the table.

January 5, 2025

We had fun celebrating 2024 with lots of movies (Moana 2, Fantastic Mr Fox, Mitchells vs the Machines, and for the oldest kids - Jumanji: The Next Level). It was fun to have root beer floats, review our favorite memories of the year, handout calendars, and finally get to sleep. We've had Dan and Sam Burnside here for much of the week and have had fun with them. The kids went swimming a few times, played many games, had a cousin sleepover, drew pictures, ice skating, touring Elder and Sister Burnsides office in the Church Office Building (including eating lunch at the COB cafeteria), and more.

Hinckley's Two Month Update

I can't believe it has only been two months since Hinckley joined our family! It feels like a lot longer than that and he is growing so big way too fast! At his two month check-up today, he weighed 13 lb 12 oz and was 26 1/4 inches long. Apparently he is so tall that he is off the medical charts for his age. Hinckley is such a happy, easy-going baby. He smiles, laughs, and coos a lot. Having him in our family is so fun because he helps us realize the joy of everything once again. He smiles at bright colors or new sounds, enjoys kisses and cuddling, and squeals in delight at seeing nature when we take walks. Yesterday at church it was like he had a rubber neck; for about five minutes he just kept turning back and forth to take it all in--the sights, sounds, and smells. Today he had to get three shots at the doctor's office and even that didn't phase him for long. Oh he screamed and his face got redder than I have ever seen it. I held him and fed him afterwards and then ...

So begins our stay in DC

I will try to keep a fairly good record of our exploits and adventures here in the Nation's capital. It is exciting and I am particularly happy about the amazing opportunities there are for pictures! Our trip began at the bus stop outside of the Barlow Center. I took an exterior shot of the Center - the top 2.5 windows on the right are ours. Once on the bus we went past some of the "Occupy" folk which was interesting. And then we came to our stop just outside of Union Station (where I will also be getting off to work at the FJC). Our first grand site was the Capital. So here we are. Washington DC is very different for both Kass and I, but we are finding a way to call it home as quickly as we can. Our first full day in DC consisted of going to Safeway on the bus, eating a modest lunch, and then going to the the Mall for the second time. We began at the capital building and headed towards the Lincoln Memorial (2 miles) before walking home another 2 miles or so. Our first st...

O.T.: Our Town

This evening I watched O.T.: Our Town , a documentary about high school students in Compton putting on Wilder's classic play at an institution where no drama event has been held in over 20 years.    A few things stood out to me about the film including the excellent characters, the unique commentary on the human condition, and the filmmaker's ability to raise the stakes.             The students and teachers that are pictured in O.T. were very dynamic and interesting. I appreciate the filmmakers avoiding trying to classify each student into a group such as  "jocks" or a "nerds".  Instead a very honest and genuine portrait was captured as the filmmakers followed individual students into their homes and interacted with their family and friends. The insight and voice of the students themselves made this fi...
