This week Addie had her performances for Alice in Wonderland and did a great job! It was so fun to see her smiling face with her "bubble braids" as she danced and sang. She and her friend Brooke had a great time and now it is all over! Hinckley had his underwater robotics competition at the Lehi Rec Center pool and their team took second place across the whole thing! He had a great time with his friend Logan and it contributed some great writing and drawings to their poster. Greyson did a whole lot more baseball this week with friends, siblings, myself, and Grandparents. He loves any and all things outside. He was telling me lately on a walk that he can't wait till school is out so he doesn't have to be "stuck to a desk all day" and can be outside doing active things. Desmond started planking and pulling up to stand. Whenever he does so he gets very pleased with himself! He gets so excited about things, including food, seeing a loved one, when the door opens to the outside, the bunnies, and books/paper. His whole body shakes and he kicks his legs very hard. It's very cute.

Kassie and I went to the temple for a ward temple night and the Burnsides came to watch the kids and stay the night. The kids enjoyed playing games with them and getting treats. Hinckley's been hanging out in Provo Saturday/Sunday with the Kays and Spencers and I enjoyed watching The Never Ending Story with Addie and Greyson Saturday night. We had a fun St Patrick's day on Monday with green pancakes and our annual Leprechaun visit that involves chocolate coins and new books. It's finally feeling like spring these last few days and everyone is very excited to get outside!

This past week I took Greyson skiing for his first time, we went to Alta. It was great! He had a lot of fun, and I managed to keep most of my coaching inside my head and I think that made a big difference. He has a positive memory of skiing now, so maybe we'll go again next season. Later in the week I took Hinckley to his Jr High orientation as he will be a middle-schooler this fall! He said he is "excited and terrified". We practiced putting in the combination to open a locker, and talked with the math and science teachers. He is going to audition for the intermediate orchestra the same day he has his club swim tryouts (in a couple weeks). I participated in a youth secretary training this Sunday given I'm the ward clerk and it was neat to be in there with Hinckley (Deacons secretary). With his hair cut and suit and emerging activities he seems to be aging and accelerated rate!

Addie started her Alice in Wonderland performances on Saturday and will go through this week. She's had a lot of fun with her friend Brooke. It really tires her out!

Somehow or the other all the kids got really into baseball. They've been throwing tennis balls back and forth to each other, and getting out the old dollar store bats and plastic balls. I finally gave into the impression to get them all mitts and real balls. They were overjoyed and any spare minute they continued asking if I could go out and throw with them. Even Greyson still wants to sign up for coach pitch after getting hit in the lip one day and a bloody nose the next. That's been a fun thing.

We had a full fun week this week. The kids didn't have school on Friday and Kassie took them to the Thanksgiving Point Museum of Curiosity. It's strange and sad that our older kids are less interested in such things as they once were. See them get older is a stark reminder that we are getting older too...! Desmond LOVED the water area and was kicking and slashing so much that it drew outside attention as strangers commented on and admired his enthusiasm. On Saturday I took the kids swimming to the rec center while Kassie went out with some friends. We all went and saw "The Prince of Egypt" at the Hale Center Theater (minus Des) which we enjoyed. Hinckley finished up all the things he had on his list for his Medieval Quest, including making a castle-cake and a report on the Black Plague among other things. He'll be having a Mediaeval Feast in a week or two which he is pretty excited about.

Addie did some more drawing this week. She and Kassie agreed on a deal for Kassie to choose what clothes Addie wears every day for a week in exchange for a king-sized candy bar. Given that the kids where mainly the same thing everyday and only use a tiny fraction of what clothes are stuffed in their drawers the goal was to expand their horizons. Addie readily agreed, and then the boys wanted in on the challenge too. It's been a unique experience seeing Hinckley wear color, Greyson wearing long-sleeves, and Addie in all manner of different patterns that she usually considers "too scratchy". Win-win I'd say.

Desmond continues crawling around doing his wandering baby routine. He absolutely hates being laid down on his back, and I'm often reminded of Nacho Libre wrestling matches and cow-wrangling rodeo stars as I dress him after a bath or in preparation for bed. I still think a great reality TV show would be to have competitions wrangling children and putting them in PJs or Sunday clothes. He's very cute and happy as long as he has extra helpings of food and sleep.

Another thing this week is we had a ward mission fair and I dug through my mission things in order to prepare a table. Youth (including Hinckley) walked around the gym and interacted with ward members who had served missions to learn about their experience. It was really fun to get out my journals and other things and was a good reminder of that important time of my life. I also enjoyed going to the regular neighborhood book group I've been attending for a few years now. It's fun to discuss a book regardless of how people felt about it.

Hinckley's Two Month Update

I can't believe it has only been two months since Hinckley joined our family! It feels like a lot longer than that and he is growing so big way too fast! At his two month check-up today, he weighed 13 lb 12 oz and was 26 1/4 inches long. Apparently he is so tall that he is off the medical charts for his age. Hinckley is such a happy, easy-going baby. He smiles, laughs, and coos a lot. Having him in our family is so fun because he helps us realize the joy of everything once again. He smiles at bright colors or new sounds, enjoys kisses and cuddling, and squeals in delight at seeing nature when we take walks. Yesterday at church it was like he had a rubber neck; for about five minutes he just kept turning back and forth to take it all in--the sights, sounds, and smells. Today he had to get three shots at the doctor's office and even that didn't phase him for long. Oh he screamed and his face got redder than I have ever seen it. I held him and fed him afterwards and then ...

So begins our stay in DC

I will try to keep a fairly good record of our exploits and adventures here in the Nation's capital. It is exciting and I am particularly happy about the amazing opportunities there are for pictures! Our trip began at the bus stop outside of the Barlow Center. I took an exterior shot of the Center - the top 2.5 windows on the right are ours. Once on the bus we went past some of the "Occupy" folk which was interesting. And then we came to our stop just outside of Union Station (where I will also be getting off to work at the FJC). Our first grand site was the Capital. So here we are. Washington DC is very different for both Kass and I, but we are finding a way to call it home as quickly as we can. Our first full day in DC consisted of going to Safeway on the bus, eating a modest lunch, and then going to the the Mall for the second time. We began at the capital building and headed towards the Lincoln Memorial (2 miles) before walking home another 2 miles or so. Our first st...

Dishes

It is that time of day when the house is quiet, the table is half covered in pots, pans, and tuber ware with food scattered across. The car isn’t in the garage and the dog lies sleeping on the blue blanket. The sun lies somewhere back there, behind the cloud over those mountains. It makes some nice gold colors on the rocky face of the mountains outside of the window. I guess it is so nice because at this time of year there is a lot of plants and flowers in the back yard so the gold makes it seem sort of dreamlike. Yeah, I’ll do em I guess. Call it being nice or being bored. Does it matter? Approaching the sink I am nipped by the denting smell. The eggshells, scraps of mango, carrot peel, and chunks of tofu drip in my fingers. Oh yes, the trash is under the sink these days. Drip once, drip twice on the floor. The water in the frying pan trembles, shaking the crusty flakes of burnt egg. Yogurt and peanu...
