Hinckley had his last day of primary today....!?!? and will be ordained a Deacon next week. Addie has some kind of bug that has her ear leaking fluids and she has been in a lot of pain. Hopefully the medicine works soon. Greyson loves all his Christmas gifts and has been over the moon with them. He wore one of Hinckey's old suits to church today and looked 2 years older. He also wrote out his own talk that he delivered in Primary today and did a great job. Desmond is cute and chunky and keeps eating a lot. We had a wonderful Christmas week this week.

Christmas 2024

Here's a hit list of some of the things that went on from most recent to oldest:
  • Watching the Truman Show with the kids and they were really into it, so good. Playing Kassie's new favorite game - Ticket to Ride with her and Hinckley.
  • Wearing Desmond in the carrier for the first time while vacuuming the house.
  • Watching the musical "Ragtime" with the two oldest and Kassie as one of the first showings in the new Ruth theater in PG.
  • Going with the Kay kids to the Bean museum, Kelli and Greyson had lots of fun with Santa's sleigh. Swimming at the Provo Rec center and there NOT being a big crowd (Christmas miracle)
  • Wonderful Christmas with the Burnsides in Lehi despite Hinckley and Addie feeling sort of sick. Greyson over the moon about I survived and his art kit, Addie in her Heelies, Hinckley and his new Zelda game. We had Abi and family over for Tamales and we played Mind Waves (Thanks Ryan!)
  • Chuck-a-Rama with Abi and kids, will this be our new Christmas Eve tradition? Maybe! Doing the nativity in the evening and Joseph and the donkey (Greyson and Hinckley) getting in a brawl and Baby Jesus (Desmond) crying so much he had to be replaced by the stuffed Grinch doll.
  • LOTR War of the Rohirrim with Hinckley, pretty epic! Luminaria with Trent and Abi's families and the three oldest. It was a fun late night!

This was the last week of school/work before the break! Hinckley had his violin concert and did a great job. He really upped his practicing these last few weeks and it showed. Addie and Kassie went on a date ice skating and had a great time. Lehi city sets up a tiny ice rink in the winter on the local baseball diamond so that's a fun thing to do without having to drive 30 min to Provo.

I had a date with Greyson watching The Best Christmas Pageant Ever (his pick) and tried not to drown myself given all my tears. He seemed interested enough in it that he didn't complain and he commented later that every Christmas movie seems to have a Grinch in it that turns nice at the end about Christmas (in this case, the Herdmans). Des continues to be cute. He takes eating very seriously. When it is food time all four of his limbs stick out in earnest longing and when he is satisfied he giggles and chuckles with deep contentment.

Christmas Sacrament meeting with Grandma & Grandad

We had a great Christmas Sacrament meeting today in which Addie, Kassie and I sung in the Ward choir. Kassie and I also played in the Ward orchestra for the final number "O Come All Ye Faithful" which was a tremendous experience for us and the 300 plus congregants as they sang the final verse with the orchestra. There are few things that I feel connect me with others more than music. Kassie made a TON of Christmas cookies this week and we delighted in sampling and distributing them. Now that they are all gone we are thinking we need more for us haha.

This week started off with going to Karen's open house in American Fork. It was great to briefly meet her new husband and chat with Nathan Jones. Addie came with me in hopes of treats and she was not disappointed. Addie had a fun sleepover at the Burnsides' apartment in SLC where she was "spoiled rotten". She had her final choir concert this week and seems relieved to have that over with. At the concert our attention was split between Addie singing and Desmond who was flirting with a 2 year old toddler. It was very cute.

Greyson finished his basketball season this week. He seemed to enjoy the season, especially since his friend Luke was on the team. He says he wants to give basketball a break so we'll see what else we can find to pour his energy into. He recently discovered Geronimo Stiltson books and has added those to his required reading list. Hinckley continues to enjoy his swimming classes and attended a really fun D&D themed birthday party this weekend. He is excited to become a Deacon next month and has really started maturing in remarkable ways.

Desmond had a great week of eating and better sleeping. He craves attention and loves exploring all non-toy items. There was some sickness this week with Addie staying home once and Greyson twice and I got a pretty awful sore throat midweek too...hopefully the worst is behind us.

This week Addie had some choir performances, one at the Tabernacle in SLC and the other in the Lehi City Santa Parade and Christmas Tree Lighting. She did great and seemed to enjoy the unique venues! We also had our Ward Christmas Party this week which went pretty well. Greyson and Hinckley enjoyed getting candy at the parade. They started writing a book together this weekend, and also discovered they love playing "wall ball" in the new room upstairs. It's so nice to have a space for them to play. I took the three older kids swimming on Saturday which they really enjoyed. We also went to our neighbor's annual cookie night and book drive. It's feeling a lot like Christmas time now!

Des is starting to sit up a little more consistently, but he isn't in any rush. The only thing he seems to have a sense of urgency with is eating everything in sight. He really began to discover his voice this week and has been babbling a bunch. It's very cute. During Sacrament Meeting today he let out a very long and complex noise that seemed to indicate he had a lot to say, but for now we can only guess as to what it is. He has developed a great sense for what are baby toys and what aren't, and he loves the latter.

Hinckley's Two Month Update

I can't believe it has only been two months since Hinckley joined our family! It feels like a lot longer than that and he is growing so big way too fast! At his two month check-up today, he weighed 13 lb 12 oz and was 26 1/4 inches long. Apparently he is so tall that he is off the medical charts for his age. Hinckley is such a happy, easy-going baby. He smiles, laughs, and coos a lot. Having him in our family is so fun because he helps us realize the joy of everything once again. He smiles at bright colors or new sounds, enjoys kisses and cuddling, and squeals in delight at seeing nature when we take walks. Yesterday at church it was like he had a rubber neck; for about five minutes he just kept turning back and forth to take it all in--the sights, sounds, and smells. Today he had to get three shots at the doctor's office and even that didn't phase him for long. Oh he screamed and his face got redder than I have ever seen it. I held him and fed him afterwards and then ...

TMA 185 3 minute film

The final product of "make me a match" that I labored over exceedingly. I was actually sort of unhappy with it all not because of the performances of anyone but mainly just the story. We had to write all so quickly and the re-write it time after time and then storyboard it and really break it down. In all this rush I didn't realize till I was actually shooting it that I really didn't care much for the story as a whole and thus my motivation suffered greatly. I don't think I need to tell epic dramatic tales to care about them but I do want to have a strong point and also a specific conflict or issue that is approached and resolved. I am starting a screen writing class tomorrow and possibly I will gain some insights as to how to develop good stories. Ones that I care about. I don't know why I feel so interested in telling stories - particularly in that I haven't felt very confident with the stories I have come up with. It is extremely hard for me to come up ...

Dishes

It is that time of day when the house is quiet, the table is half covered in pots, pans, and tuber ware with food scattered across. The car isn’t in the garage and the dog lies sleeping on the blue blanket. The sun lies somewhere back there, behind the cloud over those mountains. It makes some nice gold colors on the rocky face of the mountains outside of the window. I guess it is so nice because at this time of year there is a lot of plants and flowers in the back yard so the gold makes it seem sort of dreamlike. Yeah, I’ll do em I guess. Call it being nice or being bored. Does it matter? Approaching the sink I am nipped by the denting smell. The eggshells, scraps of mango, carrot peel, and chunks of tofu drip in my fingers. Oh yes, the trash is under the sink these days. Drip once, drip twice on the floor. The water in the frying pan trembles, shaking the crusty flakes of burnt egg. Yogurt and peanu...
